The humanist movement in Zimbabwe
Humanists Zimbabwe is the representative of the humanist movement in Zimbabwe and a member of the global humanist movement, represented by Humanists International since 2022. We strive to build a society founded upon freethought, rational thinking, ethics and tolerance.
Our mission
To build an independent, self-sustaining, effective and interactive humanist society in Zimbabwe.
We are humanists. At the core of our work is the realisation that this is the one life we have. It is our responsibility to make the most of it, not only for ourselves but for the future of other people to come.
Our history
A movement formed by merger
Humanists Zimbabwe was founded in 2023 through the merger of two secular organisations which existed before it.
Zimbabwean Atheists began in 2014 as an online community (Facebook Page) working to raise awareness of atheism in Zimbabwe. It was run on a volunteer basis by a WhatsApp community. P.I.C.H — Project for Integrating Cultures in Humanism — was founded in 2019 to create content spreading awareness of humanism and to develop humanist thought from native knowledge systems.
In 2022, PICH joined Humanists International and won a grant to build a secular digital media hub. A year later, the two communities came together as Humanists Zimbabwe — the collective successor of the non-religious movement in Zimbabwe.
How we got here
From two communities to one movement
2014
Zimbabwean Atheists
2 Students decided to take their atheism from being a private "affliction" and decided to create a Facebook Page. Within the first year, the page had 150 followers and thus an online community was born: Zimbabwean Atheists. It became the first place many non-religious Zimbabweans realised they were not alone.
2019
PICH is founded
The Project for Integrating Cultures in Humanism (PICH) launched as a platform for secular humanists and non-religious people to create content that spreads awareness of humanism. The goal was to move from the high level complex western abstractions of humanism and from it develop humanist thought from our own native knowledge systems.
2022
Joining the global movement
PICH became a member of Humanists International’s global humanist network and was awarded a grant to create a secular digital media hub — a necessary move given the stigma and censorship that secular ideas faced in mainstream media.
2023
Humanists Zimbabwe
Zimbabwean Atheists and PICH merged to form Humanists Zimbabwe — a symbol and successor of the collective resilience of the non-religious movement in Zimbabwe.
Today
A self-sustaining network
We are building an independent, effective network for a more humane and rational society. Young Humanists Zimbabwe, and growing partnerships with youth organisations and community leaders.
What we set out to do
Our objectives
Humanists Zimbabwe adopted a common system of objectives used across the global humanist organisation network.
Fight for acceptance
Stand with the non-religious and the doubting, and push back against the stigma they face.
Campaign for secularism
Advocate for a fair public square where belief and non-belief are equal before the law.
Promote a life stance
Champion humanism as a positive, ethical way of living this one life well — together.
Beyond activism
Care, content and community
Our work goes beyond activism — we are concerned with the general well-being of our community. We run an open-door podcast development program to build awareness of the humanist life stance and advocate for living an ethical life.
Humanism is still young in Zimbabwe, so we collaborate with youth organisations and community leaders to promote and preserve the values that embody our humanist value system.
So far we produce one running podcast show, Humanist Hubris, and run a project with Amazone Fitness Centre as part of our Young Humanists Zimbabwe campaign, in solidarity with the local anti-drug campaign.
